Traveling is not always the easiest thing to do for families. The great unknown can cause a lot of bumps in the road that throw your family off of their routine, causing chaos and possibly endangering the loved one’s life that you care for. From accessibility issues to modified diets, caregivers have to plan and be prepared to take their life off the normal course. If you have travel plans on the horizon and need some assistance in researching and planning your trip ahead, check out these helpful apps!

  1. Google Maps - The popular navigation app has been leading people in the right direction for years. Two years ago they improved their maps to include information about wheelchair accessibility. To find out if a place you are visiting is accessible simply click the locations description on Google Maps and check under the amenities tab.    

  2. Access Earth - If you aren’t sure where you want to go, but know that you will need certain accessibility, check out this wonderful website and app. The website was created by “a community of people working to make travel easy and equal.” Their mission is to empower more people to embark on new adventures. They help make this possible by providing information about specific locations like restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions, so people don’t have to wonder if they are accessible or not. You can choose the city you are visiting and dive in to all of the places to visit with ease.

  3. Allergy Eats - If mobility is not a problem for your family, but traveling with a modified diet is, Allergy Eats is the app for you! This website and app allows you to search restaurants all of the nation based on your modified diet needs. Simply choose the area where you want to find a restaurant and indicate which allergies you have. The app provides a list of restaurants with delicious options for you.

  4. Sit or Squat - This app by Charmin is perfect for a family on the road. Users are able to search for restrooms near them and specify their needs, like family restroom, changing table or handicap accessible. You can also rate the restrooms you’ve tried and list if you would “Sit” or rather “Squat” based on cleanliness.

  5. EMNet findERnow - While we hope that every vacation will be full of wonderful memories and smiles all the way, the reality that a trip to the hospital could be on the agenda is very real for a caregiver. EMNet findERnow allows users to search for the closest ER to them with one click. There is also tons of helpful information about the hospitals like the % of ER visits by children, pediatric trauma and burn centers, separate pediatric areas in ERs, and pediatric coordinators.
