Who We Are

Catawba Hospital is part of the Commonwealth of Virginia public behavioral health system. Catawba Hospital specializes in serving adults including geriatric clients who are in need of mental health care. Catawba Hospital is a 110-bed state, acute psychiatric hospital serving adults aged 18 through 64 and geriatric adults aged 65 and up.

Our mission is to provide psychiatric treatment with dignity to those entrusted to our care. The first priority of Catawba Hospital is to help patients regain and maintain their highest level of mental and physical functioning. The ultimate goal is for them to return to community living.

Current visiting hours are Monday through Friday from 6:30 PM until 9:00 PM and weekends and holidays from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM and 6:30 PM until 9:00 PM.

Intake Process
Individuals admitted to Catawba must be prescreened by their local Community Services Board (CSB) and meet criteria to be placed under a temporary detention order (TDO). Individuals may also be ordered by the court for involuntary treatment if involved in the criminal justice system. Catawba does not accept direct or voluntary admissions from the community.
